Registration of a business – checklist


Who has to register a business?

All self-employed people with the exception of freelancers as well as agricultural and forestry trade people have to register their business at the registration office.


What is necessary in advance?

It is absolutely necessary to check if your business is subject to a kind of authorization.

If your enterprise is listed on the Register of Companies, please have an extract of your entry available.


Which documents are needed?

  • Identity card / passport
  • Excerpt from the Register of Companies (if available)
  • Business tenancy agreement
  • Business registration sheet ("Gewerbemeldeformular")
  • For handicraft businesses: “handicraft card” (“Handwerkskarte”)
  • For foreigners: residence permit
  • € 20.00 administrative fee


Where does the registration of a business take place?

The competent authority in Dortmund is the Town Clerk’s Office (“Ordnungamt”), Department of Business Affairs (32/2) (“Abteilung für Gewerbeangelegenheiten”) Hoher Wall 5-7, D-44122 Dortmund (External Link www.dortmund.de/ordnungsamt).
